History

Land That Gives Back.

The land of Verdae was originally owned by textile magnate, John D. Hollingsworth. Mr. Hollingsworth invested in real estate because of his love for the land and belief in its enduring value. Over a period of approximately 40 years, Mr. Hollingsworth quietly went about amassing 42,000 acres, the largest holding of privately owned land in South Carolina. His belief in sound stewardship of this earth led to the planting of pine trees on all of his open lands. Soon what was once raw farmland became a beautiful forest.

Mr. Hollingsworth was also a lifetime supporter of local charities, but made his contributions privately. It was only after his death that the Greenville community learned of his magnificent charitable legacy and interests. His final wish was that his holdings be used to support the local community. Through his wish, all income from this vast project benefits Greenville County organizations and charities.
