Park becomes latest addition within City’s parks and recreation system

July 28, 2011 (Greenville SC)  - The City of Greenville and Verdae Development, Inc. hosted a dedication ceremony this afternoon for Legacy Park, the newest public park addition within the City’s parks and recreation system. The dedication of the park is the result of a unique public/private partnership between the City and Verdae Development, Inc. that allowed for the investment of more than $3 million, without burdening tax payers with the initial capital funds outlay.

“Greenville is a community that places a high value on public parks and trails,” said City Parks and Recreation Director Dana Souza. “These spaces are so important to our overall wellness and quality of life, and Greenville residents spend a tremendous amount of time in public parks and on the trail system. We are very grateful to Verdae Development for entering into a unique agreement with the City of Greenville that developed Legacy Park, so it can be available to the residents of Greenville in perpetuity.”

Officially opened in 2008, Legacy Park was inspired by New York City’s Central Park, and captures the essence of a rural or country park in the midst of a busy city. The land used to develop the public park was originally owned by John D. Hollingsworth, a leader in the Greenville business community and textile industry. The 20-acre park features rolling greens, water features, colorful landscaping, children’s playgrounds and paved pathways ideal for walking, jogging and biking.

“In keeping with the spirit of benevolence that Mr. Hollingsworth demonstrated for our community, Legacy Park was created with the intention of it becoming a public park,” states Rick Sumerel, president and COO of Verdae Development, Inc. “This beautiful amenity sits at the heart of the Verdae project and will continue to serve, not only the current and future residents of Hollingsworth Park, but also visitors area wide. It’s here for all to enjoy.”

Legacy Park is a central component of the Verdae master plan that will eventually be enjoyed by thousands of residents who value a balanced lifestyle. Verdae has already welcomed multiple residential communities, a retirement village, a public golf course and more. Greenville, SC - The Upstate Bocce Bash, held on Saturday, May 21, was enjoyed and supported by more than 400 participants, sponsors and volunteers. This was a 25% increase in participation from the inaugural event held in 2010. Proceeds from the day-long tournament totaling $20,500, were presented this week to Special Olympics South Carolina, the tournament’s beneficiary for 2011.

Legacy Square is a planned neighborhood-scaled commercial district within Hollingsworth Park at Verdae

July 27, 2008 GREENVILLE (SC) - Verdae Development, Inc. has begun site preparation for phase one of Legacy Square, the planned neighborhood-scaled commercial district within Hollingsworth Park, and has pre-sold three of the seven available pad sites for professional office and retail use. The initial corner, located at the intersection of Rocky Slope Road and Legacy Park Road, will showcase wide sidewalks, inviting storefronts that face the street and parking behind the buildings. Holliday Dental, N&H Enterprises and Verdae Development have purchased sites and will construct the first three buildings, each privately-owned. Approximately 30,000 sq. ft. of commercial space is expected for phase one. Future phases of Legacy Square will be developed on the remaining corners, nearly 10 acres.

As identified in the Verdae master plan, Legacy Square will enhance the community by placing a blend of merchants and service providers within close proximity to residents and area customers.

“The master plan for Verdae defines the vision for the entire 1100-acre development, but market demand dictates the roll-out for each project,” said Rick Sumerel, president and COO of Verdae Development. “The activity we’ve seen throughout Hollingsworth Park suggested that the time was right to begin the neighborhood retail center. Having commitments for three new buildings before an official announcement, says that we’re off to a good start.”

 
About the New Buildings/Owners:
Site A: Dr. Joseph Holliday will relocate his practice, Holliday Dental, to his new building at Legacy Square. The facility, an example of the newest concept in dental design, will be approximately 4800 sq. ft. Dr. Holliday anticipates moving to the new location in late spring 2012.

Cascades Verdae Wins Prestigious National Award
Greenville, S.C. provider takes home top honors at ALFA’s prominent Best of the Best competition

GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 5, 2011) – Cascades Verdae, a Greenville, S.C.-based retirement community, announced today that the community’s C.L.I.M.B. program has won the Assisted Living Federation of America’s (ALFA) 2011 Best of the Best Award in the category of ‘Resident Health & Wellness.”

The program took home top honors in one of the competition’s most competitive categories. C.L.I.M.B., which stands for Confidence, Longevity, Independence, Mobility and Balance, is an evidence-based lower body strength training program designed to help older adults age successfully in place.

“We are committed to programming that helps our residents maintain their long-term health and happiness in the comfort of their own home,” said Karen Nichols, executive director of Cascades Verdae.  “C.L.I.M.B. is unique because of its reliance on preventive exercises and nonclinical interventions to reduce the likelihood of negative health events which may lead to a loss of independence.”

Lower body strength is vitally important because it is a key determinant of mobility which allows older adults to perform activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and getting in and out of bed without the help of a caregiver.  Research suggests that strength-training exercises also improve balance, helping older adults reduce their chance of falling which may lead to disability, hospitalization and other negative complications.

ALFA’s Fifth Annual Best of the Best Award has expanded from previous years. Only eight winners were selected from 140 submissions, a record number for the competition. Also for the first time, allied members, members of ALFA who do not manage or operate a senior living residence, were eligible to enter the competition.

“We have the honor to spread the good news about remarkable resident-centered programs fulfilling every aspect of senior-living operations, from wellness services to staff development,” said Rick Grimes, president and CEO of ALFA. “All of this year’s entries speak to the high standard of innovation and professionalism among our members and demonstrate their resourcefulness and ingenuity.”
